- Making Contact

*********************************************************

Hi TV Stars,

A quick tip for those of you who are getting ready to start building your contact list.

RULES FOR MAKING PHONE CALLS:

1. If you leave a message, they will NOT call you back. Never expect a network executive to call you. They don’t have time.

2. Plan the call before you make it, practice on your friend or partner. Bear in mind that this is a profession that works at speed. Be grateful of any time they are likely to give you. Short and sweet!

3. KEEP A LOG BOOK!

4. Television field leaders are difficult to get hold of and some will not conduct business over the phone. It can be difficult to know when to call and to strike a balance between being keen and being a nuisance. It really depends on whom you deal with – the ‘siege’ mentality will not work with everyone.

5. Be polite.

6. Contact lesser or junior members of staff. They will be less busy than their bosses and will more time to spare. Because they usually operate at ground level they are often more in touch with the job market and closer to the executives.

7. If you have promised to call in a covering letter then keep to your promise.

8. Best to call late morning or early afternoon. Early morning and late in the afternoon phone calls will catch people at their weariest and/or sleepiest.

9. Early in the week is also advised. End of the week is usually too busy or frantic for any network.
