TOM McSWEENEY TALKS

Tom McSweeney is a leading casting director who has worked in LA for many years before moving to the Gold Coast working with the Maura Fay Group . Recently, Plop Entertainment's Derrick Siu took time to sit and chat:

DERRICK: What are the essential criteria a presenter needs to impress at a casting?

TOM: Your look, your voice, the way you think, whether you have a brain or not. My judgement of a presenter or an actor sometimes comes down to whether or not I like spending time with you. Do I like you? Do you drive me crazy? Do you interest me?

DERRICK:
What are the steps a casting director takes from the beginning to the end of a project?

TOM: First thing, we read the script or show synopsis, we then prepare a casting breakdown. We send that breakdown to agents and managers. If we are looking for a specific ethnic look or diverse physicality often we will send casting notices to church groups or community groups or schools - where ever we might find the kind of person we are looking for!

From there, we audition. We show the producer and director the audition tapes to determine a choice. If it is an obvious choice then we cast. If not often the callback procedure is required....
