ARCHIVE INTERVIEW 6
- John Walsh (Executive Producer)

John_Walsh_150
Who is the most powerful person in the TV industry?
Head Of Programming? Executive Network Chairman?Casting Director?

Well, for some media analysts it may be any one of the above! For most television presenters, however, the most influential person is any potential employer of a high-rating, long-running television show.

John Walsh is one such person.

For those of you who watch GETAWAY (an Australian travel show into its 15th season this year), you will recognise his name as it is listed nicely underneath the Executive Producer title.

John was kind enough to take out from his busy schedule to offer some advice to readers of the 'How To Be A TV Star' newsletter:

************************************

JOHN, THIS IS A DREAM JOB FOR ANY PRESENTER. WHAT IS THE
SECRET BEHIND GETTING A JOB ON GETAWAY?

************************************

No secret really. We aren't looking for people who report information. We look for people who explore and want to share their experiences with the audiences. This is a difficult thing to do as most presenters will talk AT the camera instead of TO the camera!

************************************

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR PRESENTERS?

************************************

Of course. We always keep an eye out for talent. We
open every parcel that arrives at the office. I watch
every showreel - we get about 6-10 per week.

There may not be a job going at that time (there isn't
at the moment!) but TV is so fickle and organic that
you never know when the next vacancy arrives.

*************************************

ANY SPECIAL TIPS FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO PRESENT ON GETAWAY?

*************************************

We are always looking for people who may be able to bring an audience with them. By that I mean we prefer people who have a following through another media or genre - radio, community TV, profile.

That does not mean we would exclude a complete
newcomer or novice. We have done so before and would again!
